How we approach it

Gutter Cleaning, done to a standard

Debris cleared by hand and vacuum, flow tested, with photos of the finished job.

Roof gutter cleaning is a small job that quietly protects one of the most expensive parts of a building. A gutter only has to do one thing — move water off the roof and into the stormwater system fast enough to keep up with the rain. Fill it with leaf litter, seed pods, moss and grit and it stops doing that, usually without any warning until the first heavy heavy downpour.

When water can't get away it goes somewhere else. It backs up over the fascia and rots timber, runs behind the gutter line into eaves and soffits, tracks down external walls, pools against the slab, and in older weatherboard and brick homes finds its way to plaster ceilings and cornices. By the time a stain appears inside, the damage has usually been developing for a season or two.

Blocked gutters are also a fire risk. Dry leaf and bark sitting in a gutter is exactly the fuel ember attack looks for, which is why clearing gutters and valleys before summer is standard advice for any property near bushland or heavy tree cover across Pakenham and Cardinia.

Our method is deliberately unglamorous. We clear debris out by hand into buckets rather than flushing it into the downpipes, vacuum out the fine silt that's left, clear roof valleys where they can be safely reached, then flush and watch every downpipe to confirm it actually flows. You get before-and-after photos of each run, plus a plain note on anything we find — rust, loose brackets, sagging falls, damaged flashing, nests or ponding water.

What's included

  • Hand and vacuum clearing

Leaves, bark, seed pods, moss and silt removed into buckets and vacuumed out — never pushed down the downpipes.

  • Downpipe flow testing

Every downpipe flushed and watched for backflow, with minor blockages cleared on the spot where accessible.

  • Roof valley clearing

Valleys and box gutters cleared where they can be reached safely — the first place build-up causes overflow.

  • Nest and pest removal

Bird nests, possum debris and wasp build-up removed, and entry points behind the gutter line flagged.

  • Gutter guard handling

We clean over most mesh systems, and lift and refit panels where that's the only way to do the job properly.

  • Defect check and report

Rust, loose brackets, poor falls, ponding water, split seams and damaged flashing photographed and explained.

  • Before-and-after photo set

Every gutter run documented — useful for owners, agents, strata committees and maintenance records.

  • Site left clean

Ladder points protected, garden beds and paths cleared of fallen debris, and all waste taken away with us.

Clearing a local roof gutter by hand, removing built-up leaf litter and sludge

Water damage and fire risk

Why gutter cleaning matters long before it looks like it does

A gutter has one job: move water off the roof fast enough to keep up with the rain. Nothing about a blocked gutter looks urgent from the ground — which is exactly why the repairs are usually expensive.

Water always finds the cheapest way down. When leaf litter, bark, seed pods and grit fill a gutter, the water that should be leaving through the downpipe backs up instead, spills over the front lip and runs behind the gutter line. From there it soaks fascia boards, tracks into eaves and soffits, marks render and brickwork, and in older local homes ends up in plaster ceilings and cornices. The stain inside is the last symptom, not the first.

Overflow does damage at ground level too. Water dumping in one spot instead of moving through the stormwater system saturates the soil against the slab, undermines paving and paths, drowns garden beds and, over enough seasons, causes movement in footings. Fixing a gutter is a few hundred dollars. Fixing what overflow does to a wall cavity, a ceiling or a footing is a different conversation entirely.

Then there's fire. Dry leaf and bark sitting in gutters and roof valleys is precisely the fuel ember attack needs, and ember attack — not a wall of flame — is what destroys most homes in a bushfire. Any local property backing onto reserve, bushland or heavy gum cover should have gutters and valleys cleared before summer, every summer. It's the cheapest line item on any fire preparation list.

Preventative maintenance beats emergency work every time, and the timing is straightforward: clear once the autumn leaf drop finishes so gutters run clean through winter, and again in late spring so nothing dry is sitting up there over summer. Properties with gums, pines, plane trees or a neighbour's canopy overhead need that second visit far more than they think — eucalypts shed year round, not seasonally.

  • Overflow prevention

Free-running gutters and downpipes keep stormwater in the system and off your fascia, eaves, walls and garden beds.

  • Roof protection

Debris held against roof sheets, valleys and flashing traps moisture and accelerates rust and corrosion from the inside out.

  • Fire hazard reduction

Clearing dry leaf and bark from gutters and valleys removes the fuel ember attack relies on. Do it before summer, not during it.

  • Fewer pests and nests

Standing water and packed debris invite mosquitoes, wasps and nesting birds, and give rodents an easy route into the roof space.

  • Stormwater kept clear

Debris flushed into a downpipe becomes an underground blockage. Removing it by hand keeps the expensive part of the system clean.

  • Problems caught early

Rust, poor falls, split seams and loose brackets are easy to fix while they're small — and only get found if someone is up there looking.

Common gutter problems

What we get called about, and what we actually do about it

Most gutter calls arrive after the first serious downpour of the season. Here's what's usually behind them.

  • Gutters overflowing in heavy rain

We clear the full run by hand, vacuum the silt bed that holds water, then flush every downpipe and watch it drain. If overflow continues after that, the cause is falls or a pipe blockage, and we'll tell you which.

  • Packed leaf and bark build-up

Debris comes out into buckets, not down the pipes. Valleys are cleared at the same time, since that's where build-up starts and where overflow usually begins on tiled roofs.

  • Bird nests and pest activity

Nests, possum debris and wasp build-up are removed and the entry points behind the gutter line and under roof sheets are photographed so you can have them sealed.

  • Blocked downpipes and stormwater

Each pipe is flushed and watched through to the outlet. Minor blockages get cleared on the spot; anything below ground gets reported with what we saw rather than guessed at.

  • Water marks on ceilings and walls

We identify where the overflow is entering — behind the gutter, at a valley, at failed flashing or through a rusted seam — and photograph it, so the repair addresses the cause instead of the stain.

  • Gutter guard that stopped working

Mesh that's clogged or poorly fitted traps debris on top and underneath. We clean over it where possible, and lift and refit panels where that's the only way to get the gutter genuinely clear.

  • Rust, sagging and ponding water

Where a gutter holds water permanently we flag the bracket spacing or fall as the issue, photograph the rust and split seams, and give you a straight read on whether it's a clean, a repair or a replacement.

  • Removed, not flushed

Every job is hand-cleared into buckets and vacuumed. Hosing debris into downpipes is faster and turns a $200 clean into a stormwater excavation later.

  • Flow tested, not assumed

A gutter that looks clean can still have a blocked pipe. We flush and watch every downpipe before we pack up, and note anything that backs up.

  • Valleys included

Roof valleys cause more overflow than gutters do on tiled homes, and they're the first thing skipped by cheap operators. We clear them wherever access is safe.

  • Safety taken seriously

Roof pitch and access are assessed before anyone goes up. Ladders footed and secured, and harnessing used wherever the site requires it.

  • Photo report every time

Before-and-after images of each run, plus close-ups of any defect. Useful for owners, agents, strata committees and maintenance records alike.

  • Defects reported, not upsold

You'll hear about rust, poor falls, loose brackets and failed flashing with photos attached. You won't hear about repairs you don't need.

  • Reliable scheduling

Booked windows we actually turn up in, reminders before your next seasonal clean, and pre-summer slots offered before the fire-season rush.

  • Property left clean

Ladder points protected, paths and beds cleared of anything that fell, and all debris loaded and taken with us. No bags left by the bin.
